The Annual Heisman Watch-and-Wait

Check back throughout the year for our feelings and forecasts on the players deserving of the 2001 Heisman award

The voting hasn't started -- but that doesn't stop the pollsters from having their weight felt in the AD offices around the country.  Will this University outspend that one in Heisman hype mailings, and spot ads, and interview slots, and...  And perhaps most importantly, will semi-pro defeat amateur again in the 2001 voting.  (Slight annoyance with the television-driven Heisman voting noticed in the tone?)

The 2000 Heisman may have changed college football.  We'll wait to see how many players who failed in their attempts to go pro in other sports return to the gridiron to compete against kids a decade younger.  Here's hoping the 'All Praise Weinke' fiasco doesn't turn our game into something we don't want it to be.

We suppose the 2001 Heisman race may be the determining factor.  Who do you think deserves the right to take home the trophy will, hopefully, be mirrored by the voters this coming December.  For now, let's see who the publications are pointing to for initial consideration.  (And remember -- the name "Heupel" wasn't on anyone's initial ballot in 2000, so watch out for the deserving "dark horses".)
Ed.

(The rankings are based on the following scale: number of first place votes, in parentheses, are worth five points each; second place votes worth three, third worth two, fourth and fifth worth one each.)
